Aadhaar card based LPG subsidy service was launched in 18 districts in June. The petroleum minister of India Mr. M Veerappa Moily launched the service in Tumkur, Karnataka whereas, MOS for Petroleum & Natural Gas Lakshmi Panabaka & chief minister of Andhra Pradesh started the service in Hyderabad region of Andhra Pradesh. Previously the government had planned to start the service in 20 districts from June 1, but two districts Mysore and Mandi were not included in the list as elections were going on there and the count was reduced to 18.
All the beneficiaries who have subscribed for this scheme will be credited with an amount of Rs 435 into their bank accounts which will be linked with their respective aadhaar cards when they go for booking of their LPG cylinders. With the help of this service the consumer can directly purchase the LPG cylinder from his/her dealer but at market price.
Government is planning to implement the scheme in the entire country by 2014 but the implementation will only be started if the outcome of this scheme was found useful in these 18 districts. With the implementation of this service government expects to get an annual saving of Rs 8000-10000 crore. All the consumers will get only 9 subsidized cylinder per year. LPG subsidy service will reduce the level of misuse of subsidized cylinders.
As per the new rules all the consumers who are having more than one connection will be stopped from using the other connection and will be permitted to use one connection only. Most of the people from these 18 different districts where LPG subsidy project is launched have received their aadhaar cards, but those people who haven’t enrolled for their aadhaar or haven’t received their aadhaar yet will be given an extended period of 3 months.
