Banks Demanding Aadhaar Number in Varanasi

****
The government is trying to speed up the process of launching Aadhaar card based Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme in different parts of the country. Since banks are an inseparable as well as most important part of this DBT scheme, some banks have been asking their customers to submit the details of their Aadhaar cards. In the latest from Varanasi, many banks have been demanding their customers to submit the details of their unique 12 digit UID number so that their bank accounts can be linked with their Aadhar numbers.

This step is being taken by the bank authorities in view of the government’s decision of implementing the DBT scheme in the country very shortly. Special instructions were given to the bank authorities by the Finance Ministry, under which banks have been updating the KYC i.e. Know Your Customer forms of all their existing members as well as linking their bank accounts with their respective Aadhar numbers.

All the customers are being informed through SMS as well as other communication media so that they can submit their details at the earliest. Out of 5.25 lakh LPG consumers in the district of Varanasi, only around 1.25 lakh consumers have updated their Know Your Customer (KYC) form so far. The Himachal Pradesh government has been gathering a lot of praises from the central government for its remarkable stats of Aadhaar enrolment but the reality is actually different from what is being told.

As per the records submitted by the concerned authorities, 93% of the total population in Himachal Pradesh has already enrolled for their UID cards and out of these 83% of the people have already received their cards. The HP state government claimed that their target was to enrol each and every individual of the state within 3 months. As per the authorities, out of the 64, 45, 602 people who enrolled for Aadhar, 57, 23, 720 people have already received their UID cards. But the stats collected by a private agency are telling a completely different story.

According to the report, only 59% of the total population in HP have received their aadhaar cards so far. 22% of people have not received their cards yet, even though they are waiting since the last 1 year. When confronted, the authorities are putting all the blame on the postal department. However, the postal department is not in the mood to accept any of these allegations being imposed on them. Since the HP government has already made Aadhar mandatory in the state, people who have not received their cards yet are facing many problems.

They are not able to take admissions in colleges, get their ration card, get a new LPG connection as well as they are denied of opening bank accounts. People living in all those districts of HP where this scheme has been implemented are being denied of the services to which they are entitled. Lately, the authorities have informed that all those people who got enrolled before March 2012 and have not received their Aadhar cards yet that they may have to re- enrol for the same.

In Jammu & Kashmir, the process of Aadhar enrolment has begun in full swing in the Rajouri district. The concerned authorities have asked the enrolment employees to go from village to village and door to door in order to ensure that not even a single individual is left out from being enrolled. The J&K government wants to finish the enrolment work as soon as possible so that people are not deprived of the schemes as well as welfare services being provided by the government.
