After accepting serious challenges as well as criticism regarding the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme by the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, the PMO i.e. the Prime Minister Office has asked all the ministries to pay proper attention to the functioning as well as benefits of this DBT scheme. In this regard, work has to be accelerated now. The job of preparing digital databases that will contain the details of all the beneficiaries in the 2nd phase of implementation of Direct Benefit Transfer is also to be carried out at a faster pace.

This 2nd phase is supposed to be started very soon in 78 districts throughout the country. The PMO has written letters addressed to secretaries of all the ministries to remind them of the decisions that were taken during a meeting held in early April this year. The agenda of this meeting was to discuss the progress as well as working of the 1st phase of DBT scheme which was implemented in 43 districts throughout the country.

Through the letter, the ministries have been asked to speed up their working so as to begin the 2nd phase of DBT scheme on the decided time. The Finance Minister of India, P Chidambaram informed that the government has been lately planning to provide LPG subsidies under the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme. While addressing a press conference, the FM said that he is supposed to hold a meeting with M Veerappa Moily, the Petroleum Minister of India.

In this meeting, the topic of discussion will be providing subsidy for LPG cylinders under the DBT scheme. He added that the government was aiming at including LPG subsidy under the DBT scheme at the earliest. He also said that the detailed planning and description regarding its implementation is yet to be finalised. When asked about the various complaints received during the 1st phase of DBT scheme, he admitted that all those complaints were completely true. He assured the people that DBT scheme will be implemented throughout the country by the end of the current financial year.

On a positive note, M Veerappa Moily has confirmed that the DBT scheme will be implemented for LPG subsidy in 20 districts very shortly. He also informed that the database of all the beneficiaries entitled for LPG subsidy has already been prepared and hence they were facing no issues on the technical grounds.
